    Arthur W. Birkmaier was the son of Walter R. Birkmaier; he apprenticed with his father beginning in 1911. Returning from service in World War I, he began with the Skinner firm of Boston, Massachusetts as a voicer; then in short succession he was with the James Cole firm of Boston, the Dennison Organ Pipe Co. of Reading, Massachusetts; and finally with the William Laws firm of Beverly, Massachusetts in 1921. Four years later (1925), he was with the Welte-Mignon firm of New York City, New York, as head flue voicer.
