Notes

  • Identified through online information from James R. Stettner. -- Installation of the former 1905 Murray Harris Echo Organ in the rear of the sanctuary with some new pipes and a new façade. Made possible by special gifts given by John and Elizabeth Herrick; and also by Herb and Elizabeth Hezlep, whose support made possible the addition of a Trompette en chamade stop in the re-installed Echo organ. Several foundations also contributed to the organ endowment fund; a very generous grant from the Ahmanson Foundation fulfilled the campaign goal of $350,000. The organ was releathered by Robert Turner in the summer of 2003 along with console renovations. The newly rebuilt instrument was formally rededicated in a recital and a special worship service on November 1 and 2, 2003. (Database Manager. February 27, 2007)
  • Updated through information from Doug Hezlep: -- It was not until the 2002-2003 period that the [installation of the entire organ in the new building ] was completed, the console rebuilt by Robert Turner reusing all the original woodwork and replica knobs, couplers, etc. and the organ renovated (mainly releathering, swell shade upgrading, facade stabilization, and the replacement of a few missing pipes (usually from 2' and shorter); the console retains the Aeolian-Skinner nameplate. Schantz reinstalled the echo with a new Trompette en Chamade in the gallery (James Cook. May 17, 2009)
  • Updated through online information from Doug Hezlep. -- The organ's mechanical restoration in the 2002-2003 period was by Newton Pipe Organ Service; Robert Turner rebuilt the console but was otherwise not involved. The Schantz Company restored and reinstalled the echo organ with dummy flue pipes in the façade and a few replacement speaking pipes for ones that had been severely damaged during the long period of storage. Schantz also supplied the new copper Trompette en Chamade, which is installed with the echo but is a floating register. In the main instrument, the 32' Contre Bombarde (the "Contre" prefix was added at the time the console was rebuilt) has 3/4 length resonators rather than half-length. This was one of several such extensions that Mr. Whiteford experimented with in the late 1950s.
The information regarding the organ's refurbishment and completion in the 1979 building came from direct conversations with the then director of music and a subsequent brochure published by the church. The information regarding the 32' reed extension came from the late Robert Prichard at the time the organ was being reinstalled in the new building. (Database Manager. February 16, 2015)
