Paul R. Marchesano on February 23, 2022:

The organ was originally a Hutchings-Plaisted Opus 62, built in 1876, with a detached tracker console. It was silenced in 1947 during sanctuary renovations, and was salvaged by two Eagle Scouts who had returned it to playing condition with a makeshift console and its original hand pump for the final service in the old church prior to St. John's relocation across town. Stored for 17 years, it was restored by Angerstein and Associates in 1987 as their Opus R34 and reinstalled at St. John's in 1988 replacing a Wicks instrument. The new console and bench were made of black walnut salvaged from the old church building by one of the Eagle scouts (the submitter of this update), and from pews from the old sanctuary. The work included replacing front case panels that had been replaced with oak panels during the 1947 renovation. -- information from Jesse A Galt
