NOTES
This is the church's third organ; second pipe organ. The first instrument was purchased in
1904 by the Ladies Aid and Mr. O. Hokanson. It is believed to have been a reed organ.
In 1943, pledges were taken for a fund for the purpose of obtaining a pipe organ. In 1946
a pipe organ was built and installed by the Guenther Organ Co. of Portland, OR. At the end
of 1957, Dr. & Mrs. Sture presented the church with an 8' Viol d'Orchestre [83 pipes ?] as
a gift to the church. Another set of pipes was added in 1968 as a memorial gift from the
Sture and M.K. Smith families. This addition was dedicated December 22, 1968 in memory of
Dr. Julius K. Sture and Mr. M.K. Smith.
In 1980, Balcom and Vaughan of Seattle, WA. was contracted to build a new instrument, util-
izing the best of the old pipework. Eight original ranks have been retained. The present
Great 8' Dolce is the original Great 8' Dulciana and is presently under expression on its
own new chest inside the Swell chamber. The present 8' & 2' Gedeckt is part of the original
Stopped Flute unit from the original Swell. The present 8' Viola is made from the original
Swell 8' Violin Diapason; and the present 8' Viola Celeste is made from the original Swell
8' Salicional rescaled. The present Swell 4' Principal was originally in the Swell. And the
present Swell 4' Harmonic Flute was originally in the Great. The present 8' Oboe was also
originally in the Swell. The Pedal 16' Sub Bass is original. Stops marked with an asterisk
(*) in the above specification are original.
The Pedal 16' Gedeckt Bass takes its bottom 12 notes from the 16' Sub Bass on soft wind, and
the balance from the Swell 8' Gedeckt. The Swell 1-1/3' Nasat breaks back to 2-2/3' pitch for
the top 7 pipes.
As originally contracted, the 8' Trompette on the Swell was a preparation to be added at a
later date. However, funds for its inclusion were acquired in time to allow its addition from
the beginning. The contract cost of the organ was $39,215.00 plus $2,400.00 for the Trompette
making the total cost $43,615.00.
Also retained from the 1946 Guenther are the console shell & rolltop, and the bench. All other
components are new.
