NOTES
This organ was a gift of the Class of 1940 as a memorial to the first beloved Principal,
Mr. Vaclav Karel Froula. V.K. A subsequent Principal, Mr. Cecil Bullock, would play
weekly organ concerts before school.
The organ was installed in two chambers on either side of the stage arch. Concrete grilles
fronted the chambers (and limited tonal egress). The Great was on the left and the Swell
on the right. The Swell division had an addition set of expression shutters which faced
onto the stage and were made available or not by the use of On/Off pistons in the Great
key slip.
The console sat in fixed position at the front of the auditorium at the left edge of the
stage with the organist facing across the front of the room – stage to the left and aud-
ience to the right.
When the high school underwent a major interior renovation in the early 2000s, no provision
for the re-installation of the organ was made. The Seattle School Board agreed that they
would pay for funds for the creation of chambers if the funds required for its rebuilding
could be raised elsewhere. The Friends of the Roosevelt High School Froula Memorial Organ
was established and $115,000.00 was raised for the rebuilding and enlargement of the organ
for installation in the new theatre. The old auditorium became the library.
