NOTES
The church's previous two instruments in the previous edifice were: (1) a III-manual,
26-rank tracker-action instrument built by Geo. H. Ryder of Boston, Mass. in 1899 as
his opus 151. The disposition of the Ryder is not known. (2) a III-manual, 29-rank,
electro-pneumatic Estey built in 1943 as that firm's opus 3147. When the new [present]
church was built in the 1950's, the Estey was sold to Millwood Presbyterian Church in
Spokane, Washington and installed there by Balcom and Vaughan.
The new church was provided with a new, III-manual Wicks pipe organ installed in three
expressive chambers across the front of the church. The organ was dedicated by Lauren
B. Sykes who thereafter was invited by the church to become their organist. The Chimes
and Celesta were added after the original installation.
The Swell 8' Vox Humana was installed inside its own enclosure within the Swell chamber.
It had its own Tremulant – called vibrato. The Vox Humana enclosure was also fitted with
a lid that was normally in the open position, but which could be closed by drawing on
the Swell stop labeled Vox Humana Softer which allowed a pneumatic to exhaust - closing
the lid.
In 1968, the unified 8-rank, unenclosed Antiphonal division was installed at the rear of
the sanctuary – cantilevered off of the back wall. It was named in memory of former pastor,
Dr. Laurence E. Nye. A permanent bronze plaque mointed to the west side of the Antiphonal
Division cabinet reads:
Antiphonal Division
In Memory of
The Rev.
Laurence E. Nye, D.D.
Minister, 1945 – 63
The contract for the construction of the Antiphonal organ was signed on September 16, 1966.
The cost was $21,342.00 which covered its construction and installation. Local carpentry and
electrical preparations cost another $3,500.00. It was installed by regional Wicks represent-
ative Mr. Charles W. Allen of Seattle. Installation began in the spring and was completed in
September. The wind pressure was 2½”. It was dedicated in worship on Sunday, November 24,
1968, and with a dedicatory recital that afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Three organists and one
soloist participated in the dedication.
A new IV-manual console was also provided as part of this project.
In 1976, Balcom and Vaughan Pipe Organs, Inc. of Seattle Washington was contracted to make
tonal changes and additions to the existing Wicks instrument. Some ranks were swapped between
divisions. Some ranks were transposed an octave in pitch – from 8' to 4'. The Bombarde divi-
sion was prepared for and to have played from the 4th manual.
In subsequent years, the organ was rebuilt, modified, and enlarged yet again.
