Richard Coates was with a military band in England. Moving to Canada, he was in Quebec, Canada by 1817; and in York {now Toronto}, Ontario, Canada by 1818. He was a portrait painter; a builder of mostly barrel organs from c. 1820 until his death. He also operated saw and threshing mills in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, 1831-1861; and had a farm near Rodney, Canada.
