William Jackson was born about 1836 in England. He immigrated to the United States and was in Albany, New York, by 1868. He moved west to Chicago, Illinois, by 1869; While in Chicago, he was partner with Henry W. Chant in Chant & Jackson, 1869-1870; then partner with Charles H. Davie in Davie, Jackson & Co., 1870-1871.

By September, 1873, he was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with the Marshall Bros. firm, as head voicer. By 1875, he was in business for himself in that city, he became proprietor of Jackson Piano Co. 1877-1885, providing tuning and maintenance of organs and pianos. His tuning business grew in Wisconsin, in 1885 he had offices in Appleton, Fond du Lac, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Ripon, and Sheboygan.
