James E. Miller was born in 1948 in Salem, Ohio; he was a graduate of Olivet Nazarene College of Kankakee, Illinois, and Southern Baptist Seminary of Louisville, Kentucky. Miller began with Hillgreen, Lane & Co. of Alliance, Ohio. In 1968 he formed a partnership with David Skinner doing business as Miller-Skinner Organ Co. of Bourbonnais, the firm relocated to Manteno, Illinois, sometime before closing in 1972. After the partnership was disolved, Miller established Miller Pipe Organ Co. of Louisville, Kentucky, in August of 1972. The Miller firm was associated with the Schantz Organ company of Orville, Ohio.

In 2010, Miller began cutting back activity and planning his phased retirement. In 2013, the Millers (Jim and wife Ruby) turned over the company name and certain assets to their Chief Technician, Gary Waller. Waller and his business partner Don Martin reorganized the company as Miller Organ Service LLC while James Miller transitioned to full retirement.
