James Woodberry was born in England; he and his brother Jesse Woodberry emigrated to the United States sometime in the 1880s and worked with Hook & Hastings of Boston, Massachusetts. After leaving Hook & Hastings, he and his brother Jesse, were partners with James Cole in the firm of Cole & Woodberry of Boston, Massachusetts, from 1886 to 1899.
