Joseph Buffington established his business in Philadelphia in 1842. By 1867 he had built 150 organs. Included in the list are St. Philip de Neri, St. Theresa, and St. Alphonsus Catholic Churches; the Third, Sixth, Seventh, and Penn Square Presbyterian Churches; the Western, Trinity, and Green Street Methodist Churches; and the Spruce Street and Tabernacle Baptist Churches, all of Philadelphia. All of these were described as "large Organs, of splendid tone and good workmanship, which have deservedly given Mr. Buffington a high reputation." Buffington's instruments were concentrated in the Philadelphia area, but he had at least one instrument in Jacksonville, Florida, (OHS Database ID 10555).
