"Church Burned: A Brick Steeple Falls and Several Firemen Barely Escape," *Daily State Ledger* (Jackson, MS), Monday, May 23, 1892, 1, Newspapers.com, accessed May 1, 2023, https://www.newspapers.com/image/248725068: Meridian, Miss., May 23.—The First Baptist church, a magnificent structure costing $18,000, was destroyed by fire last night, caused, most probably, by an explosion of gas in the basement. /The fire was not discovered until beyond control, and half an hour after the sexton had finished lighting up for the evening service. A $2,500 pipe organ had just been placed in position and is totally destroyed. The falling of the brick steeple, over 100 feet high, came near burying the firemen beneath the debris. There was $7,000 insurance on the building and $2,000 on the organ.
