The organ was installed here in 1905, second hand. A contemporary newspaper account states the organ was from Arch Street Presbyterian in Philadelphia, however there are inscriptions within the organ “Christ Church, Louisville”, which was opus 118, 1883, and an identical instrument; very similar to catalog Style 54. 58-note manual chests, 27-note pedal chest; electrified in 1952. -- 2008 OHS Atlas
Updated through online information from Joe O'Donnell.
The organ was relocated by an unknown builder (possibly Balcom & Vaughan) to Chism Recital Hall in the Hall of Music, presumably at the time of the building's construction. The console is on a movable platform but normally resides in a dedicated room at the right side of the stage, just below the organ chamber.
The drawknobs are in an advanced state of deterioration, rendering the organ unusable, though it is playable. There have been tonal changes, primarily new reeds and mixtures. The Tracker article from 1960 indicates a Choir enclosure also housing part of the Great. In the present installation the Swell is the only enclosed division, and its shades are moved by a first-generation Peterson controller.
Built in 1883 for Christ Church, Louisville, KY. Moved here 1904 [by Marshall-Bennett?]. Relocated to McDowall Recital Hall & rebuilt by Balcom & Vaughan in 1952, 3-55, electric pulldowns, with Reuter console.
