Opus 982, 1938

From William Wittenburg, Christian Science Architecture: Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist, Detroit formed in 1928 and first met at the Carstens School, but they quickly moved to a Masonic Temple and purchased their lot on Kercheval Avenue almost immediately. In 1935, an anonymous gift of $125,000 (I'm guessing this was from Mary Rackham, based on previous information in the Fifth Church post) enabled the church to begin construction of their permanent edifice, which featured a unique design style. A moderne design, Sixth Church included modernized, streamlined renditions of classical design features and massing, very in line with the times and resulting in one of the best Christian Science examples of an Art Deco/Streamline Moderne church. It was designed by George D. Mason's firm, which also previously designed Third Church. Constructed between 1938 and 1939, the church held its first service in 1939 and was dedicated with three services in 1945. The organ was Aeolian-Skinner Opus 982 of 21 ranks and 3 manuals, with 1,403 pipes.
Sixth Church soldiered on in this building until around 2010, when, as the last Christian Science Church in Detroit, it ceased operations. It is now the Abundant Faith Cathedral, but the original "SIXTH CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST" inscription is still visible on the exterior of the building.
