I visited the organ recently. Not all pipework is original to 1858. At the time of writing this note, it is uncertain whether the original pipework went missing in the 1970s move or was removed by Koehnken & Grimm during a revision of the Schwab organ while it was still under their care. The 8’ Violon Bass (a lovely open wood flute) is missing from the pedal. In its place is an 8’ Violoncello, which is a Koehnken and Grimm rank from a later era. The 8’ Violine and 8’ Hohl Flute in the Swell were missing (including the swell box itself). These two ranks were replaced by a 2-2/3’ Quint and a 2’ Super Octave rank, also Koehnken and Grimm ranks. There is an unusually high presence of Rohr flute pipes in the organ as all of the flutes except the Swell Gedeckt turn into Rohr flutes. The Rohr flutes are undoubtedly Schwab, but might have been from other Schwab organs. The pipework seemed to have been re-racked when it was moved so tonal changes might have been made then. The great Gedeckt 8’ starts out Stopped, then turns into a Melodia for a few pipes (all of which have been altered to re-pitch) then turns into a Rohr Flute. The pedal 4’ Flute is a Swell Rohr flute. Further investigation and careful examination is required. The “newer” pipework is spotted metal and has K&G inscribed on the foot of some pipes. Schwab did not used spotted metal in his work. Visited 6/30/22 and recorded. Organ is in usable condition but deserves thoughtful historical restoration. As part of the move from St. Joseph's c. 1970, the pedal was electrified due to space constraints. Pedal ranks are now on stand-alone chests scattered around the balcony. Manual-to-pedal coupler remains mechanical. Drawknob face plates were crudely replaced c. 1970, and it seems some stop names were altered from the original German during this time. Pedal ranks use original drawknobs connected to toggle switches. An earlier stoplist mentioned 8' Oboe as "unavailable," but pipes are present and usable. Same stoplist mentioned an IV Mixtur which now appears on drawknob as a III Cymbale; unknown whether composition of mixture changed at same time.
