Database Manager on June 8th, 2009:
Identified through on-line information from James R. Stettner. -- Contract was not to have exceeded $25,000.00. Final cost was $60,000.00. Organ fell into disfavor with the formation and popularity of the symphony. Insufficient room on stage for both organ and symphony. Sold in 1884 for $5,000.00 to William O. Grover whose intent was to give it to the New England Conservatory. Organ removed by Geo. S. Hutchings. Grover died and organ lay in storage. Sold at auction in 1897 to settle Grover's estate. Purchased for Edward F. Searles by Dr. Jabez Baxter Upham for $1,500.00. Organ placed in storage in Methuen while Serlo Hall built. Upham died in 1902. Serlo Hall completed in 1909. Organ re-installed by Methuen Organ Co.
