30 note pedalboard, 428 metal pipes, 46 wooden pipes, suspended mechanical action. Freestanding oak casework, installed floor level at the back wall of the church underneath the right side of the Buhl Nave Organ case. Vocal choir relocated from chancel to pews near the instrument. An organ committee was active in February 1980 to look into repairing or replacing the Christ Church’s 1938/1942 Buhl instrument. (See DB entries.) The Buhl started failing in a major way in July 1983 – with the Great division most impacted by missing notes. This led to the purchase of a small “temporary” Nigel Church instrument (of 1985) to bridge the gap between the failed Buhl and its replacement in 2008. (Source: CC Organ Committee file.) The Nigel Church instrument was sold to Cornell University, Ithaca NY.

Mark A. Smith on September 20th, 2026:

Per a conversation with Christ Church music director Stephen Kennedy on 9/20/2026, he stated that the Nigel Church instrument was purchased new by Christ Church, Episcopal, 141 East Avenue, Rochester, NY, US to act as a temporary substitute for their failed Buhl Organ Co. instrument (1938/1942) while the organ committee pondered a suitable replacement. (See DB entries.) The Nigel Church instrument was removed from Christ Church prior to March 2007 to allow a new west end gallery to be built to accommodate Christ Church’s new GOArt (2008) instrument. The Nigel Church instrument was sold to Cornell University for use in their Annabel Taylor Hall Chapel, as their Hellmuth Wolff & Associés Opus 6 instrument was removed in mid-May 2008. (See DB entry).

Per a conversation with First Church congregation member Ester Haney on 9/14/2026, she stated that the instrument was installed in the First Church of Christ, Scientist in 2009. It had been obtained from Cornell University as work was being completed on installation of the new GOArt organ (2010) in Annabel Taylor Hall Chapel. (See DB entry.)
