From The Republican Journal, Belfast, Maine, 19 April 1888:
"Oliver C. Stevens. Esq., of Boston, class of '70, has given to Bowdoin College $1000 to be expended in the purchase of an organ for the chapel. One of the provisions of the gift is that the instrument shall he played regularly at all chapel exercises by some student who shall be paid out of the funds of the college."
From the 1992 OHS Handbook:
Research thus far has failed to reveal who built the first pipe organ in the Chapel. Second pipe organ in the chapel. The second organ was extolled In a letter from Prof. Henry L. Chapman.
