Compensating Pipe Organ Co.

From The St. Catharines Standard (May 3, 1902): "The new pipe organ purchased by the R. C. congregation of Thorold from the Compensating Pipe Organ Co., of Toronto, will be installed some time this month. It is a very fine two-manual instrument of twenty-four stops and mechanical pedal combinations, and latest attachments; has a compass on each manual of 61 notes and 30 pedal notes, and is perfectly balanced and graded from the softest tones of the aeoline stop to the dignified grandeur of the full organ. The case is to be polished quarter cut oak with Gothic front and will be in perfect keeping with the architecture of the handsome church." The opening recital was performed on June 11, 1902, with Mr. H. West, organist of McCaul Street Church in Toronto, soloists Mr. H. Ruthven Macdonald, Miss Harrison and Miss Laura Sheldrick, with an attendance of 400 raising $100 toward the organ fund.

According to longtime church organist, Margaret Galvin, the organ had a very heavy action. The instrument was replaced in the 1940s by a Hammond organ, though the casework remains.
