It is possible that Edward Lye & Sons rebuilt an earlier instrument of their manufacture ca. 1885-1887. The Berkeley Street Methodist Church opened in 1872 and the original instrument is conjectured to have been installed then. A contract dating from 1885 outlines mechanical and tonal changes to an existing 2-manual instrument.
