Episcopalian missionary work in Goshen began in the mid-1850s, but it was not until Easter Monday, April 25, 1859, that St. James was organized. The cornerstone of the parish's first and only church building was laid on August 22, 1860, and the structure was consecrated on December 4, 1862. The parish evidently desired to purchase an organ from Henry Pilcher at the time but was forced to recall the order (see the notes on instrument 16592). A $2,000 pipe organ was installed in May of 1900.
