In 1935 the sanctuary of Salem church was extensively remodeled. The existing electrified tubular pneumatic organ and its facade were removed. Twin enclosed chambers were constructed on either side of the chancel area that formerly housed the organ. W.S. Merritt of Lancaster was contracted to rebuild and reinstall the organ in these twin chambers with tonal improvements, new electric actions and detached console.
