Balanced Swell expression pedal, Balanced Choir expression pedal, grand crescendo pedal. [unspecified] couplers to manuals and pedals. 12 combination pedals adjusted by means of a switchboard containing 136 electric switch pins. From the Cornell Daily Sun of 11/12/1898: "NEW ORGAN FOR SAGE CHAPEL. [the E. & G.G. Hook & Hastings (Opus 816, 1875) organ] is so entirely rebuilt as to be practically new. A peculiarity about the new organ is the arrangement of its stops and the devices by the player, those of the new organ are electric. All the devices for altering the tones are operated by temporary, soft-iron magnets, and controlled by a switchboard within easy reach of the performer. There are over five hundred of these magnets, and they are electrified by currents which traverse several miles of fine wire. There are forty-five stops, controlling three sets of manuals of fifty-eight notes each. The bellows, of which there are two sets, are operated by hydraulic motors placed in back of the organ." The WK&S organ was moved from its west end location in 1903 to a new north/east transept position (due to space concerns in the west end.) The move was controversial, as the organ's "experimental" electric action was troublesome even prior to the move. The failing organ was soon replaced by E. M. Skinner Opus 175 in 1909.

Mark A. Smith on August 4th, 2026:

The 50th Anniversary of the Sage Chapel Organ booklet noted that the space limitations in the West end of Sage Chapel had become a growing problem, and was discussed by the Cornell trustees in 1902 (four years after the WK&S installation). By 1903, there were at least three options being considered: 1) move the choir and WK&S instrument "intact" to the more spacious north/east transept; 2) Replace the failing WK&S instrument with a new one in the north/east transept. (A letter of October 12, 1903, from [prof] Hollis Dann to [Cornell] President Schurman about the 1898 organ stated that the mechanical parts could "never be made to work satisfactorily," because its experimental electric action was "defective"); or 3) add an extension of "at least twenty feet to the west" end of the Chapel. It turns out that all three things were done - eventually. The WK&S organ was moved intact to the north/east transept and Chapel reopened on January 17, 1904. In May 1909, a contract was placed with Ernest M. Skinner Company of Boston for their Opus 175 with a price of $12,000 and a completion date of October 15. In 1940 the west end of the chapel was extended to accommodate choir risers and the rebuilt EMS organ as Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1009.
